Palestine, 1917. The Turkish barrier stretching from Gaza to Beersheba has halted the British advance. The latest assault on Gaza was unsuccessful. The invading forces included the Light Horse regiment of Australian mounted soldiers... Frank, a lighthorseman, is injured in a clash with Bedouin. He is replaced by a young soldier named Dave, who shows to be an expert marksman but is hesitant to shoot on the enemy. Dave demonstrates his worth during a German biplane raid. While recuperating in the hospital, he meets Anne, a sympathetic nurse... The regiment is required for a daring flanking assault on Beersheba. But how can you convince the Turks that Gaza will be the primary target? And how do you attack across a desert without water?
